Introducing the Traceability of Honey: Bees & Blockchain Project
Humber College, a leader in innovative education, has embarked on an ambitious project: "Traceability of Honey: Bees & Blockchain." This initiative is set to revolutionize how Canadian honey reaches the global market. By leveraging blockchain technology, the project ensures that every jar of honey is traceable from hive to table, providing consumers with unmatched transparency and authenticity.
- Incube: Known for their cutting-edge supply chain solutions, Incube brings expertise in blockchain technology. Their platform powers the traceability system, ensuring every jar of honey is documented and verified.
- Niagara Bee Group: Representing the best of the Niagara Region’s beekeeping community, the Niagara Bee Group is our chosen honey supplier for this project. Their dedication to quality and sustainability is integral to our mission.
The Journey of Our Honey
Every step of the honey production process is meticulously documented using GS1 and EPCIS standards. Each jar is embedded with a unique QR code, which, when scanned, reveals the entire journey of the honey.
Steps in the Process:
Steps in the Process:
- Collection: Raw honey is collected from the hives.
- Pasteurization: The honey is raw and unpasteurized
- Packaging: Each jar is filled, labeled, and sealed.
- Traceability: Unique QR codes are affixed to each jar, powered by Incube’s blockchain platform.
Global Market Expansion
This initiative will provide Canada's high-quality honey with the opportunity to enter international markets that prioritize quality and traceability, such as the Middle East, particularly the Gulf region, Europe, and Japan. Ensuring that the product is genuine and its life journey is well documented will be key to gaining acceptance in these markets.
The Impact of Collaboration
This project is a testament to the power of collaboration. Humber Research & Innovation, Incube, and the Niagara Bee Group have joined forces to create a seamless traceability system. Supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the dedication of student researchers, this initiative highlights the potential of innovation in modernizing supply chains.
The Future of Supply Chain Solutions
Together, we are setting a new standard for supply chain transparency. By leveraging blockchain technology, we ensure that every drop of honey can be traced back to its source. This project is just the beginning of a new era in global trade, ensuring quality and transparency in every jar.
